Democratic Alliance of Burma
- Democratic Alliance of Burma
(DAB)
A multiethnic united front established in the border areas in November 1988, following the seizure of power by the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC). Bo Mya, leader of the Karen National Union, became its chairman. The DAB initially included all the major insurgencies, with the important exceptions of the Communist Party of Burma and Khun Sa's drug-dealing Mong Tai Army. They included the All Burma Students' Democratic Front, the All Burma Young Monks Union, the Democratic Party for a New Society, the Kachin Independence Organization, the Karen National Union, the New Mon State Party, and 17 other groups. The alliance was celebrated as an unprecedented example of Burman and ethnic minority oppositionists working together. However, the DAB had little influence in central Burma, failing to coordinate its activities with those of the National League for Democracy, and it was greatly weakened by the defection of insurgent groups, which signed ceasefires with the SLORC beginning in 1989.
